Ulaanbaatar, simply known as UB City, is the capital of Mongolia and was founded in 1639. It is located on the shore of the Tuul River, surrounded by four sacred mountains — Bogdkhaan, Bayanzurkh, Songino Khairkhan and Chingeltei Khairkhan.
Today, the city contains almost half of the country's population (over 1.5 million), making it the most populous city of Mongolia. It is the country's political, industrial, and cultural center and a hub connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway with the Chinese rail system.
Like many capital cities in the world, Ulaanbaatar offers a variety of sightseeing options ranging from historical sites to monasteries, museums, monuments, parks and nightclubs. Most of the historical sites, monasteries and museums are within walking distance from the central square Sukhbaatar.
Peace Avenue (Enkh Taivnii Urgun Chuluu) is the main street that stretches from east to west through the center. It is the main shopping street where many of the restaurants are found. The street also passes by the southern edge of the Sukhbaatar Square.
For business and pleasure alike, you will find yourself coming to the city at least once. Knowing and exploring the city properly can help you understand the country's history and its wonderful people. One will often see the past and the present are still living side by side.
